You can navigate between episodes by clicking the episode in the "Table of Contents" in the left navigation. If you are on mobile, you will need to click the icon on the top left of the screen to open the navigation menu where you will see the "Table of Contents".

How can I go back to another episode?

If you see "Coming soon" when you try to play a case, it means the episode has not yet been released by your host or instructor. For more information on when the episode will be released, please contact your host or instructor directly. They will have the most accurate and timely information.

To transfer a case to an organization, you need to be authenticated on LiveCase and to be an admin of the organization. Here are the steps to follow: - Go to your account page - Locate your organization in the left-hand menu and click on the "Cases" link. - Click "Add case" on the top right of the page. - Find the cases you want to transfer to your organization and click on the "Transfer" button. - Done Once the case belongs to the organization, admins will be able to assign who is the current author of the case.

Search for the player, and next to their name, there is a button to rewind. Please note that the player needs to reload the page for the changes to take effect. We recommend doing this in their presence.

A player answered the wrong question, how do I change it?

To remove a player, navigate to the "Players" page under the "Manage" section in the left-hand navigation of your session. Scroll down to the "Players" section and click the "Remove" button next to the player you wish to remove. You will be prompted to confirm the removal before the player is deleted. IMPORTANT : Once a player is removed, their progress and answers cannot be recovered.

You can invite people to join your session by sending them the share link that can be found in the "Invite" page of your session. You can invite players by sharing a link, QR code, session code, or integrating the session directly into your course if you are using Canvas. When players click the link, they will be invited to join your session. They will then need to create an account or log in and will be able to play the case! IMPORTANT : For Harvard Business Publishing and Case Centre users, access to the "Invite" page is not available on the Livecase platform. Instead, you will find the share link within the coursepacks on their respective platforms.

How can I invite players to join?

You can find your hosting session either: - In the "Currently hosting" section of your dashboard (if it's still running). - In the dashboard page, then click the "Hosting" filter at the top of the page.

Where can I find my hosting session?

You can add co-hosts to your hosting session by following these steps (subject to subscription plans): - Have your co-host join the session like a normal player would. - On the "Players" page in the left navigation of your session, find them in the players' section, and you should see "Co-host" next to their name. You can share the URL to the page with them (Should look like this: https://www.livecase.com/app/host/XXXXXXX ), or they can go to their Dashboard and select your session (Might need to page reload).

How can I add a co-host?

To address this, you have two options: 1. Rewind Episode: - Go to the player management page in your LiveCase host panel. - Click the circular arrow next to the player's name to rewind to the start of the desired episode. - The player can then modify any answers in that episode. - Note: Changes will take effect after reloading the page. 2. Remove and Re-add: - Remove the player from the case within the LiveCase platform (not HBSP). - Re-add the player, which will reset their answers, allowing them to provide new responses.

How can I change a player's response when they answer incorrectly?

The learner will only appear on the Livecase simulation once they have clicked on "Run simulation" on the Harvard website. Please refer to this article for more information. There could be other reasons why you are not seeing participants on LiveCase: - You are in the wrong session. If you have more than one session running, make sure you are in the correct session. - Internet connection issues. It happens. A page reload should fix it. - You are authenticated with the wrong account. Have you registered directly on our platform? If so, you need to logout and login through the Harvard website.

I'm not seeing a Learner on Livecase?

The creation of groups or teams can either be organized off-platform (not on Livecase) or on the Livecase platform depending on the case you are using. As a side note, Livecase is team agnostic and works whether you create groups or not. Decisions from participants don't impact others (except for the leaderboard) to avoid issues of conflicts, absences, dropouts,...making the experience smoother for the Instructor and Learner alike. Groups/Teams off-platform If in-person, you can simply separate your participants in different locations. Otherwise, you can create groups in your preferred method (Excel, Word, Email, ...) and share them with the participants. The Livecase platform doesn't require teams to be created to function as mentioned above. A modal will appear and show all the answers to that question. If you want to see the answers from a specific Learner, please: - Go to the "Report" page. - Scroll down to the leaderboard. - Find the Learner you wish to view the answers for. - Click on their score on the right column.

Where can I find all the learners' answers?

For your security and to help you keep your account safe, we recommend that you choose a password that is harder to guess. We use an algorithm called "zxcvbn" to check the strength of your password based on a security white paper attached here: Security white paper. If your password is too weak, you can try to: - Use a longer password - Use a combination of numbers and letters - Add special characters (ex: !@ $%^& () +=-) - Avoid (or add) dictionary words What is zxcvbn password strength estimator? zxcvbn is a password strength estimator inspired by password crackers. Through pattern matching and conservative estimation, it recognizes and weighs 30k common passwords, common names and surnames according to US census data, popular English words from Wikipedia and US television and movies, and other common patterns like dates, repeats (aaa), sequences (abcd), keyboard patterns (qwertyuiop), and l33t speak.

The LiveCase methodology has two scoring methodologies: - A generic score - Scores based on the content of the case Both are averages, so whatever score you get on a question will be averaged with the other questions to give you a final score. Tldr - Individual questions are scored out of 1000 points. - An episode score is the average of all the scored questions - A season score is the average of all the episodes that have a scores - A case score is the average of all episodes that have scores Question scoring A question is scored out of 1000 points. If the player has the correct answer, they will receive 1000 points. If they answer incorrectly, they will get 0 points. If a timer is set on the question, the rules change slightly. 60% of the 1000 points will be given for the correct answer and the remaining 40% will be a ratio based on how long they took to answer (even if they get the wrong answer). Example Let's say you have a scored question with a timer for 100 secs. If the player takes 23secs to answer: - Time points : the player will receive 40% of 1000 points times the time ratio (aka 1000 x 0.4 x (100 -23) / 100 ), so 308 points - Correct answer : if the player answers correctly, we will add 60% of the 1000 points to the time points (aka 1000 x 0.6 ), so 600 points Giving the player a total of 308 + 600 = 908 points. Episode scoring Because of the dynamic nature of Livecase, players can have a various number of scored questions (one player might have no question, while the other has 5). For this reason, Livecase does an average of scores so that they are comparable. Characteristic Scores Case-specific scores, also called Characteristic Scores, are based on the content of the case. These will vary depending on the content of the case and could include categories such as Leadership, Communication, etc. These scores are also averages, but the scoring system is decided by the case author. It could be out of 5, 10, 20, 100, etc., and is at the author's discretion.

It's common to have many played cases as an author. It's the best way to test out your material. The downside is that they can pile up. As an author of the case, you'll have the option to delete your play session. To do so, simply select one of the cases you are playing from the dashboard "Playing" section. In the session details panel, find Danger and Leave session . Read the confirmation carefully: leaving an author test session removes its play progress and responses. You can also review your play and host sessions under Account > Session management . Check the selected sessions and available action before making a change.

How do I remove cases I've played?

To clone a case, you need to be authenticated on LiveCase and to be the author of the case. I can't use my case?

The most likely reason for this to happen is publishing. This feature allows you to work on new content and edits without other people being able to use it until you are ready. After all, artists don't want to show their unfinished work, neither should you. So here is the flow: - Editing: You make the edits you need, whether that be adding new episodes, characters, or content, no one will see the changes until you publish. - Ready: When you are ready, you publish your changes making the changes usable to others. Please note that sessions that were started before your published changes, will keep the previous version, only new sessions will have your changes. LiveCase places you within a scenario in which you examine information, interact with characters, and make decisions. Your instructor will explain how the activity relates to your course and how your participation will be used. This guide covers access, participation, and preparation for the debrief. Some controls depend on the case and your instructor's settings. Watch the learner introduction 1. Join the correct session Use the session link, QR code, or access instructions provided by your instructor. If your course uses Harvard or another institutional platform, enter through that platform as instructed. Follow the sign-in or registration prompts shown for your access route. Confirm that the case and session correspond to your course. If you cannot gain access, contact your instructor with the case name and the message displayed on screen. 2. Read the instructions before beginning Review the scenario and any preparation assigned by your instructor. Establish the time available and whether you should work individually or with others. Do not assume that every case uses the same timing, scoring, or participation format. 3. Work through the experience Read the information presented by the characters and respond to the activities as they appear. Depending on the case, you may encounter multiple-choice decisions, written responses, supporting media, or conversations with AI characters. Consider the evidence available at each decision point. Where a response requires explanation, make your assumptions and reasoning explicit. Your choices may influence the subsequent sequence of the case. Take care before submitting an answer. Submitted decisions are not freely editable because later content may depend on them. If you need to restart, contact your instructor about rewinding. 4. Navigate and recognise waiting states Use the Table of Contents to navigate between available episodes. On a smaller screen, open the navigation menu at the top left to find it. A LiveCase session brings a cohort together around a case or simulation. As the instructor, you can review the material, manage participation, monitor decisions, and use learners' responses to support discussion. This guide follows the teaching sequence from preparation to debrief. In the application, an instructor with session management access is called a host . Watch the instructor introduction 1. Select a case and create a session Open the case you intend to teach and select Start case . Choose Host when prompted to select your role. Hosting gives you access to facilitation and reporting tools without requiring you to participate as a learner. If you access LiveCase through a Harvard coursepack, begin with the Harvard guide. Access and invitation steps depend on the platform through which your institution obtained the case. A session is distinct from the case itself. Use a separate session when you need to keep cohorts and their results separate. 2. Prepare the learning experience Before inviting learners: - Review Read case to understand the sequence, key decisions, and possible branches. - Consult Teaching notes when available to your account. Identify the learning objectives, preparation requirements, and suggested debrief questions. - Decide how much time to allocate to individual participation and collective discussion. - Review Release to choose automatic progression or instructor-controlled release. - Review Settings , including whether learners should see one another and their results. Invite learners Open Invite to find the available joining methods, including the session link, QR code, or session code. Avoid substituting a direct invitation when learners are expected to enter through their course platform. Share the learner guide in advance. Ask learners to confirm that they have reached the intended session before teaching begins. 4. Facilitate participation Use Players to check who has joined and Dashboard to monitor progress. If you selected manual release, use Release to make episodes available in sequence. Learners waiting for unreleased content will see a holding page. Explain the purpose of the activity, the time available, and how learners should approach individual or collaborative work. Review evidence and lead the debrief Use Responses to examine decisions and written answers. Where the case includes AI interactions, AI Chats provides access to those conversations. Debrief is available when the case includes debrief slides. Select contrasting responses for discussion. Authoring a LiveCase involves designing both a learner experience and the evidence that will support its debrief. Begin with the learning objectives, then develop the scenario, decisions, feedback, and facilitation guidance around them. You can create a case with AI assistance, follow a guided process, or work manually in the editor. In every approach, review the content and pedagogical design before using it with learners. 1. Define the teaching purpose Before opening the editor, establish: - Audience and context: learners' prior knowledge, course setting, and available time. - Learning objectives: what learners should be able to analyse, decide, or explain after the activity. - Central dilemma: a decision that requires learners to weigh evidence and competing considerations. - Evidence of learning: the responses, conversations, or decisions you will examine in the debrief. - Facilitation plan: how the activity will connect to preparation, discussion, and subsequent learning. Use the authoring framework, authoring guide, or briefing questionnaire to organise your thinking. 2. Choose an authoring approach Sign in and open Create a case. The creation page offers three approaches: - Full AI Draft: begin with a topic or source material and develop a draft for review and adaptation. - Guided: work through a structured authoring process. - Full Manual: work directly with the authoring tools for greater control over the structure and content. Choose the approach that fits your starting material and preferred workflow. An AI-generated draft still requires subject-matter review, factual checking, and alignment with your intended learning objectives. Create with the LiveCase MCP plugin The LiveCase MCP plugin connects your AI assistant to LiveCase so you can develop a new case or revise an existing one through conversation. It also gives the assistant access to LiveCase's authoring skills, design guidance, and templates to help build a coherent learning experience. These resources support scenario development, pacing, distinctive character voices, learner readiness, interaction design, and assessment. Ask the assistant to use them to connect the learning objectives with the decisions learners make, the feedback they receive, and the subsequent debrief. Introduce characters and context clearly so learners understand their role and the decisions they are being asked to make. Select interaction types according to the learning task. Use written responses to surface reasoning, choices to explore alternatives, and supporting media when it adds relevant evidence. Publishing makes a version of your changes available for use in new sessions. These are distinct steps. Sessions created before a new publication retain their earlier version. Intro to the host pages

In this section, we will go over the preparation needed to get things set up and ready, as well as what you can do while the simulation is running. Setup None required. You have nothing to prepare on the platform ahead of time. Depending on which Livecase simulation you selected, you may have the following requirements: - Role selection This is done BY THE LEARNER on the Livecase platform. The instructor has nothing to do setup-wise. We do often find it easier if you prepare an Excel/email and tell each participant which role they should select on the platform. - Groups This is also not done by the Educator. It is done by the participant themselves. You can add to your Excel/Email above which group they are in and let them follow the on platform instructions to add themselves to the groups. You can refer to this article for how Learners create groups. Reviewing the content It is very important to follow the TEACHERS NOTES provided on the Harvard website to get yourself familiar with the content. Having said that, you can also review all the content on the Livecase platform itself in the "Content" tab located at the top of the page. From there you can select an episode and review it. Setup & Preparations

Step 2 of the authoring process on Livecase - Case types

Depending on the length and complexity of your desired case content, you might want to create a series, a season, or an episode. The same format you have for television. As a point of reference for your decision, we usually don't recommend an episode to last longer than 10-15mins. Breaking it up allows the player to take a breath and make it clear what the learning is for each section. We have an algorithm on the bottom of the "Edit chat" content that creates a time estimate for you and gives you a rough idea. Series The series format allows the creation of large content. We usually recommend it for more experienced case writers, but if you are feeling confident in your skills, you can try it out. The format will look something like the following: - Season 1 - Episode 1 - Episode 2 - ... - Season 2 - Episode 1 - Episode 2 - ... - ... Of course, you'll be prompted to give each season and episode a name. Season Is a shorter version of the series above and would have the following format: - Episode 1 - Episode 2 - ... Episode Is the shortest version available. Ideal for homework, class intro, quizzes, etc., and consists of a single episode.

Authoring video guides

Content review You can review the content ahead of your course by simply clicking the 'Read case' page located in the left menu of the hosted session and selecting in the dropdown the season and episode. The vertical sequence shows the case content in order. Review the questions, alternatives, feedback, and any badge conditions before teaching. The next view shows the characteristic values attached to each answer and the badge awarded by one alternative. Use these details to understand which decisions affect scoring or later content. Release of content If you choose, you can either release all the content of the simulation, or episode by episode. This is easily managed in the "Release" page under the "Manage" section in the left menu. Please note that if you turn off auto-release, you will need to return to the "Release" page and release episodes when you need them, otherwise the player will be placed on a "Coming soon" holding page. IMPORTANT NOTE Episodes must be released in the correct order and cannot be skipped or re-ordered. The simulation is dynamic and adapts based on participants' decisions, making the sequential release mandatory. Settings The settings page allows you to configure the session settings and preferences. You can control the following: - Individual experience Turn on/off individual experience. This enables, or disables, the ability of the players to view each other in the course. - Hide all results from players Turn on/off the ability for players to see their scores. This can be useful if you want to keep the scores hidden until the end of the course. - Certificate Turn on/off the certificate. This enables, or disables, the ability for players to receive a certificate at the end of the course that they can download or share on social media.

Login to Harvard Business Impact : Go to the Harvard Business Impact platform and log in with your credentials. 2. Navigate to your coursepack : Find and open the coursepack that contains the Livecase simulation. 3. Now to the fun part, creating content. After creating your case, you will see a bar called "Content", click it to manage content: The view might be different depending on what kind of case you created (Episode, Season, Series). - If you chose "series", please first create a "Season" by clicking Add a season and giving it a name (Ex: Season 1) - Please click "Create an episode" under the newly created season (Season 1) and give the episode a name (Ex: Episode 1) - Click Edit chats to edit the content of the episode. - If you chose "season", please first create an "Episode" by selecting Add an episode and giving it a name (Ex: Episode 1) - Click Edit chats to edit the content of the episode - If you chose "episode", you can simply click the content editor After following the above links, you will be redirected to a new page where you can start writing content for your case. Click the Add message on the bottom to start writing your first message. You'll be asked: - Type: Please see the section below for a breakdown of the options - From: Who this message appears from - Message: The message of the chat Let's first create a character. On the right of the "From" field, please click the "create" link to create a new character. Give your character a name and optionally a description (also used in character cards, educator notes, and AI conversations) and an avatar or a color if your wish, then click "Create". The popup will close and you can then select it from the "From" field dropdown. Feel free to create as many characters as you want, bearing in mind, that for the benefit of players, characters should be introduced so they know who they are speaking with. Once you have chosen a case, created a session, and familiarized yourself with the content, you are ready to invite players to join! Go to the "Invite" page and view the available options to invite players: From this page, you will be offered a variety of options to invite players to join your session, such as: - Share link : Copy the link and share it with your players via email, chat, or any other communication tool. - QR code : Download the QR code and share it with your players. - Session code : Recommended for more regular users, it provides a code to share and enter. - Canvas integration : If you are using Canvas, you can integrate the session directly into your course. When players click the link, they will be invited to join your session: They'll then just need to create an account or login and will be able to play the case! Open Visibility in the authoring sidebar to choose who can access your case. The screenshot shows a fictional local example with Only me selected. - Draft: a work in progress that is not available to play. - Only me: only you can play and host the case. - Unlisted: people with the direct link can access the case. It does not appear in your catalog. - My catalog: the case appears in your personal catalog and can be shared by direct link. - Public (LiveCase only): the editor currently marks this wider listing option as coming soon. Visibility and publishing serve different purposes. Visibility controls access; publishing releases a version for new sessions. Review both before sharing a case with colleagues or learners.

Visibility

Use the reporting tools to examine participation, decisions, and reasoning before leading the debrief. Select evidence that helps learners connect the experience to the learning objectives. Leaderboard and scores Learners engage through a friendly competition when Authors and Instructors have allowed for it. In the 'Dashboard' part of the hosted session, you can check the Leaderboard for participants 'Scores' or 'Characteristics' across seasons and episodes. With the filter and search functionalities, you can track and compare individual Learners or groups of Learners. You can click individual Scores or Characteristics per Learner to check their evolution and drill down into the details per season, episode, and question. Review Learner choices Once the Learners take part in the LiveCase and make choices, you can review them at any time during or after. You can use these results for debriefing by focusing on key decisions. Individual response views provide CSV exports. For a complete session workbook, use Download everything on the Dashboard . To do so, simply, click the 'Responses' tab of the hosted session then select the Season and/or Episode you wish to review. Then scroll down to the question you wish to check, click it, and it will display the results. This provides you with valuable debrief insights to ignite the conversations. You can view who answered what, how long they took to answer. ML/AI Text Analysis For text answers, we provide term frequency and sentiment analysis scores. Both can be used for a variety of research and/or debrief reasons. For example, with term frequency, you could review the semantic use of language and its evolution. With sentiment scores, you can e.g. get a sense if there is a match between the context and the response. We also provide AI generated information extraction tools to help you understand the content of the responses. Review AI conversations When a case includes AI interactions, open AI Chats and select an interaction to review the associated conversations. Use the available conversation details to examine how learners framed a problem, used evidence, and responded to feedback. The page also provides a CSV download for the selected interaction. Treat automated grades and analysis as inputs to your review. Read the relevant conversation before drawing conclusions about a learner's understanding. Export the session workbook On Dashboard , select Download everything to export an Excel workbook containing participant answers, scores, feedback, and AI chats. Allow the export to finish preparing before trying again. Use the workbook to support review and assessment in accordance with your course's stated criteria and institutional practices for handling learner information. Structure the debrief Where the case includes debrief slides, open Debrief to use them alongside the session evidence. You can also facilitate discussion directly from Responses and AI Chats . A useful sequence is to ask learners to describe their decisions, explain their reasoning, compare alternatives, and identify what they would transfer to a different context. Consider contrasting responses rather than focusing only on the highest scores.

Step 5 of the authoring process on Livecase - Publishing your case

A notion that should be understood is "Publishing". This feature allows you to work on new content and edits without other people being able to use it until you are ready. After all, artists don't want to show their unfinished work, neither should you. So here is the flow: - Editing: You make the edits you need, whether that be adding new episodes, characters, or content, no one will see the changes until you publish. - Ready: When you are ready, you publish your changes making the changes usable to others. Please note that sessions that were started before your published changes, will keep the previous version, only new sessions will have your changes. This allows you to not break previous sessions in case you add or remove content. Open Publish & Share to review draft changes, validation checks, and the available test-session controls:

Publishing

You can have players play the whole content right away, or you can release content when you decide, episode by episode. By default, content is set to "Auto-release". This means that the content is released automatically for the player to play. If you would like to turn this off. Simply go to the "Release" section (left navigation). Once your turn off auto-release, you will now be able to release content at your discretion, by using the toggle switch next to each episode: Some notes: - You cannot skip episodes . Due to the dynamic nature of the platform, the content must be played sequentially, and you can therefore not skip episodes. Ex: If you release episodes 3 and 4, but episode 2 is not released, they will be redirected to a holding page. - You can turn off episodes again . Please note that if some players have already started an episode you "un-release", they will no longer be able to progress until you release it again. Their progress will still be saved though, so once you release it again, they will be exactly where they were before. You can share for free or earn money by selling your cases. Sharing You can share your cases in whatever way you like once it is no longer in "draft" mode. Open Publish & Share for the colleague-sharing link and hosted-session controls. Review visibility before distributing the link. Earn money You can publish and share your case like shown above, but before (or after) you publish, you can set a price on the case in the Pricing section of the case creation pages. Thereafter, you will earn a percentage of the price you set. You'll be able to view the breakdown of the transactions in your Account / Payout page. We use a third-party service called Stripe to handle the payments. They are trusted by thousands of companies across the world for their reliability and security. General tips Chats We offer various chat types to effectively convey your learnings. To ensure engagement and effectiveness, consider the following rules of thumb for almost all chat formats: - Keep them relatively short : It's generally best to keep the chats concise, aiming for a length that could fit inside a Tweet. While there can be exceptions to this guideline, brevity helps maintain player interest. - Alternate : To prevent monotony and keep players engaged, incorporate different chat formats. While text is essential, intersperse questions, images, gifs, or videos approximately every ~4-8 chats. This interactive element encourages player participation. Additionally, you can enhance the chats by interjecting images, files, or other multimedia content to diversify the learning experience. - Sprinkle some questions : Questions are a great way to keep the player engaged and make sure they are following along. We recommend that you sprinkle some questions throughout the episode. You can also use them to make sure the player is following along and understands the material. If they answer incorrectly, you can give them a badge to go over the subject and explain it in further detail. Duration Whether you choose an "Episode" or a "Series", we don't recommend that an Episode last much longer than 10-15mins. Breaking it up allows the player to take a breath and make it clear what the learning is for each section. We have an algorithm on the bottom of the "Edit chat" content that creates a time estimate for you and gives you a rough idea. Characters Characters are great to build immersion and context. From our experience though, you usually don't want to use more than 3-4 characters per episode. Especially early on in the series. It is worth introducing the main characters through chat content type "Context" so that the user is not lost trying to figure out who is who. We've seen some authors include a tagline or position in the display name to make the process of remembering the characters easier. Badges Badges are an incredibly powerful tool, and like all powerful tools, they should be used with some caution, or at least a proper understanding for a smooth experience, both for you, the author, and the player. You can use badges for: - Personalized learning journey : The best way to make sure every player completely understands your teachings. If a player answers a question incorrectly, you can give them a badge to go over the subject and explain it in further detail. Keeping everyone engaged and on the same level. - Different storylines : Make the players' decisions have an impact on the series and feel like their choice matters. - Different roles : Do you want your players to have different roles in the series? No problem, assign them different badges. This allows your players to organize into teams and have different information and requiring them to talk to each other to get the full picture. - Different industries/subject : You can ask the player to choose different industries or subjects at the start and tailor the content for that. We go into further details in another article, but here is the gist, Authoring with badges can become extremely complex. The easiest way to use it is to imagine a highway (which represents your main story thread), and have some exits from time to time to dive deeper into the subject if required (personalized learning journey) and have them join back the main highway afterward. Conclusion Following these rules of thumb should get you started on your journey to build a great learning experience for your players.

Chat types are the building blocks of a LiveCase experience. They determine how learners receive information, interact with characters, and respond to decisions or questions. Choose each type according to the learning task: presenting evidence, eliciting reasoning, exploring alternatives, or supporting reflection. This guide covers the 31 types available in the current authoring menu . Each participant preview shows how the interaction appears to learners, using fictional case content. Previews are visible below each description; expand View authoring settings when you want to see how a type is configured. Screenshots are static examples, so controls within them are not interactive. Author notes are internal, and the Genially section links to an external presentation example. In unidirectional mode, review the maximum value and whether learners may answer that they would never switch. The interpretation depends on how you configure the comparison. Teaching example: Ask how much value a learner would require before switching between two projects, then discuss the assumptions behind that threshold. View authoring settings: Allocated Balance AI interactions Talk to character (AI) An open-ended conversation with a virtual character. Use it for activities such as interviewing, negotiation, stakeholder engagement, or practising a reasoned explanation. Participant preview: invitation to begin the AI conversation Configure: Select the character and review its general knowledge, interaction-specific knowledge, learner prompt, conversation limits, feedback, and grading criteria. Voice interaction is available when enabled and configured. Test the scenario and criteria before using it for assessment. Teaching example: Ask learners to explain their launch recommendation to the operations director and respond to questions about the evidence. View authoring settings: Talk to character (AI) Video Avatar A generated video message delivered by a character avatar. This is a prepared audiovisual message, rather than a live conversation with the learner. Participant preview: video player shown with an illustrated sample briefing Configure: Select a character with the required avatar configuration, write the script, and review the available scene and generation controls. Generate and inspect the video before use. Changing the script may require regeneration. Teaching example: A character delivers the opening brief or introduces a change in circumstances. View authoring settings: Video Avatar Presentations Slide A structured presentation block with a title, text, and layout controls. Use it for a framework, summary, instruction, or transition that benefits from a clear visual hierarchy. Participant preview Configure: Select the layout and configure the text, sizes, and colours. Review Fill screen on initial load if you want the slide to open prominently. Check contrast and reading order. Teaching example: Summarise the three criteria that must be satisfied before a launch can proceed. View authoring settings: Slide Gamma An embedded Gamma presentation. Use it when an existing presentation contributes material to the case. Participant preview: button that opens the Gamma presentation Configure: Provide the presentation link or embed information requested in the editor. Check its sharing settings and test access as a learner. Teaching example: Include a short strategy briefing, then follow it with a question requiring learners to use its evidence. View authoring settings: Gamma Genially An embedded Genially resource. Use it for an interactive presentation or exhibit hosted in Genially. Participant view: The published presentation appears directly within the conversation, with its own design and interactive controls. Open a public Genially presentation example. This external example uses Genially’s Business Proposal template; its appearance depends on the presentation you embed. Configure: Add the embed information requested in the editor and check external sharing permissions. Preview the resource on the devices learners will use. Teaching example: Provide an interactive exhibit that learners inspect before making a decision. View authoring settings: Genially Chat type: Code The Programming language option displays formatted code. Use it when reading or analysing a code fragment is part of the learning task. It is not a code-execution environment. Participant preview Configure: Choose the language and enter the code. Keep the example focused and explain what learners should examine. Teaching example: Ask learners to interpret a query used to calculate failure rates, then collect their explanation with a Text question. View authoring settings: Code Context Chat type: Context The Context - Text option provides narrative information outside a character's message. Use it to establish the learner's role, change the setting, or mark a meaningful passage of time. Participant preview Configure: Write concise context that makes the next interaction intelligible. Use a Message instead when the information should be attributed to a character. Teaching example: Introduce the pilot results and the criteria for the forthcoming decision. View authoring settings: Context Context - Image An image presented as contextual material rather than as a character's message. Participant preview Configure: Add the image, alternative text, and available display settings. Choose this form when the image establishes the scene or functions as a neutral exhibit. Teaching example: Display an opening case brief or a diagram of the operating environment. View authoring settings: Context - Image Context - Video A video presented as contextual material. Participant preview Configure: Configure the video and its transcript or accompanying explanation. Confirm that learners can access the source before the session. Teaching example: Introduce a recorded situation briefing before the first character exchange. View authoring settings: Context - Video Context - File A supporting download presented as context. Participant preview Configure: Upload the document and use a descriptive filename. Explain why learners should consult it and which part is relevant. Teaching example: Provide the case briefing or a shared evidence pack at the beginning of an episode. View authoring settings: Context - File Context - Browser A formatted document within the case. Despite the name, this is a content block for reports, briefings, or exhibits, not a general-purpose web browser. Participant preview Configure: Add a title, screen-reader summary, and content. The editor supports Markdown and HTML, with an in-editor preview. Use clear headings and provide text alternatives for visual evidence. Teaching example: Present a release dashboard with a table of failure rates and a list of decision criteria. View authoring settings: Context - Browser Author tools Author note An internal note that is not part of the learner conversation. Use it to organise scenes or record design and facilitation guidance. Participant view: None. Author notes are visible only to authors and do not appear in the participant conversation. Configure: Write a note that helps authors understand the purpose of the surrounding content. Do not place learner-facing instructions here. Teaching example: Record the misconception a decision is intended to surface, or the evidence to revisit in the debrief. View authoring settings: Author note Review before teaching - Align the interaction with the objective. Choose the response format that makes learners' reasoning or decisions observable. - Check the options actually available for the type. Timers, scoring, confirmation, feedback, badges, and characteristic controls are not identical across every question format. - Distinguish scores from interpretation. A confidence rating, ranking, or switching point is not inherently a correct or incorrect answer. Explain any scoring criteria in relation to the activity. - Review AI feedback. Test it with plausible responses and inspect the underlying conversation or written answer before drawing assessment conclusions. - Provide accessible alternatives. Use meaningful image descriptions, transcripts for audio and video, descriptive file names, and sufficient contrast. - Preview the sequence. Check branching, media access, timing, and the learner experience on desktop and mobile before publishing. For related guidance, see Content, Badges and branching, Characteristics, and Publishing. Older cases The application retains support for older formats such as Context GIF, Context Emoji, and Custom Score. These are not currently offered as separate choices in the authoring menu. Their presence in an older case does not mean a new author should expect to find them in the Type selector. Review an existing item's behaviour before changing it.

Create badges, award them through answers, and use them to tailor the learning pathway.

The what/why/when to use badges Badges are an incredibly powerful tool, and like all powerful tools, they should be used with some caution or at least a proper understanding for a smooth experience, both for you the author, and the reader. We'll be covering the what/why/when to use them here. What? Badges are tags for your readers that can be given when they answer questions. These badges can then be used to show or hide future messages in the series. Empowering you to personalize the learning journey or have different outcomes. Why? We believe that having personalized learning journeys is vital. It allows you to keep everyone engaged and on the same level. Badges allowed us to do that in an extremely flexible way and can be used cross-episodes/seasons. When? The best ways to use badges: - Personalized learning journey : The best way to make sure every reader completely understands your learnings. If a reader answers a question incorrectly, you can give them a badge to go over the subject and explain it in further detail. Keeping everyone engaged and on the same level. - Different storylines : Make the players' decisions have an impact on the series and feel like their choice matters. - Different roles : Do you want your readers to have different roles in the series? No problem, assign them different badges. This allows your readers to organize into teams and have different information and requiring them to talk to each other to get the full picture. - A/B Testing : You could use badges to A/B test different stories or learning strategies. Authoring with badges can become extremely complex. The easiest way to use it is to imagine a highway (which represents your main story thread), and have some exits from time to time, like getting gas/snack, to dive deeper into the subject if required (personalized learning journey) and have them join back the main highway afterward. But the choice is yours on how to use them. How? The screenshots below show the current authoring interface with fictional case content. Each illustrates a different step in the same example: awarding Review the evidence after a particular answer, then showing a targeted follow-up activity. 1. Create a badge Open Badges from the authoring sidebar and select Create a new badge . Enter a meaningful name and a description of its purpose, then choose a colour and select Create . You can revisit these settings with Edit . For a badge that controls content visibility, leave Not used for branching unchecked. That option is intended for badges hosts can change without rewinding, such as administrative groupings, and prevents their use in branching. Grouping of badge (Optional) provides a grouping label for the host interface. Badge settings for “Review the evidence”. The same fields are available when creating and editing a badge. 2. Award the badge through an answer Return to Content and add or edit a Multiple Choice or Popup multiple Choice question. Under the relevant answer, choose the badge in Gives badge , then select Save . Create at least one badge first so these answer controls are available. In this example, selecting the desktop checkout answer awards Review the evidence . The follow-up invites the learner to reconsider their reasoning. Awarding a badge and marking an answer as correct are separate settings. “Gives badge” determines which answer awards the badge. 3. Make later content conditional Create or edit a later message or question. In Only visible if badge , select Review the evidence , then select Save . Place this follow-up after the question that awards the badge. The example below uses a written-response activity asking the learner to justify a recommendation with evidence. A message with an explanation or an additional exhibit could serve a similar purpose. Leave the badge requirement as None for content intended for everyone. The badge requirement controls who sees this follow-up activity. 4. Review the configuration Return to Badges to review the badge and its usage counts. Given and Used here describe references in the authored content, not the number of learners who have received the badge. One answer awards this badge, and one later activity requires it. 5. Preview both pathways Use Preview episode to check the answer that awards the badge and an answer that does not. Confirm that the intended follow-up appears only on the appropriate pathway, that essential instructions remain available to everyone, and that the paths rejoin where intended. Keep the first branching activity simple. Use the debrief to examine learners' reasoning; receiving a badge alone does not establish mastery of a learning objective. Follow the normal publishing process when the revised experience is ready.

Configure scoring dimensions and review them from author, learner, and host perspectives.

Characteristics are scoring dimensions you define for a case. They can represent an aspect of a decision, such as evidence analysis, or a simulated outcome, such as costs. Choose dimensions that have a clear relationship to your learning objectives and explain how their values should be interpreted. The screenshots below use fictional cases and learner data. Each shows a different stage of the workflow. How to create a characteristic Open Characteristics in the authoring sidebar, then select New characteristic . Give the characteristic a name and a useful description. Choose its type: - Average: averages the assigned values from relevant responses. Set the Average out of value to define the scale. - Sum: adds the assigned values. This can represent a cumulative outcome, including positive and negative contributions. Use Is hidden from players when the metric should be available to instructors without being displayed to learners. Session-level settings can also hide learner results. The example uses an average out of 10. The screenshot shows the settings of an existing characteristic. The characteristic type cannot be changed after creation. The average scale is locked when the characteristic is already assigned to answers. If you need a different scale, create a replacement characteristic, update the relevant answer assignments, and review the results before removing the old one. How to use characteristics In a Multiple Choice or Popup multiple Choice question, select Assign a characteristic beneath an answer. Choose the characteristic and enter the value associated with that answer. Repeat for the alternatives and select Save . Other supported question formats expose their own scoring controls; review the chat types guide for their purposes. The strongest evidence-based response is assigned 10 on the Evidence analysis scale. Review the other values against the same criteria. Test representative response paths. A score reflects the rules you configured; it should support discussion of the learner's reasoning rather than stand alone as a claim about a general ability. What do characteristics look like to learners? When results are visible, learners can see their characteristic metrics in the session details panel and in the completion summary. Selecting a characteristic metric opens its breakdown. Learners can select an episode to inspect the relevant question, their response, and its contribution. What does the host see? On Dashboard , choose a characteristic under View metric in the Leaderboard . Select the episode or overall results, then review the individual or team values. Use Advanced search when you need to filter by name or badge. Select a learner's characteristic value to inspect its underlying responses. Use this evidence to prepare feedback and select contrasting examples for the debrief.

Connect ChatGPT, Claude, Claude Code, Grok, Grok Bot, Codex, and other MCP clients to LiveCase.

The LiveCase MCP plugin connects an AI assistant to your LiveCase authoring tools. You can discuss a teaching idea, inspect an existing case, and ask the assistant to save agreed changes directly in LiveCase. MCP stands for Model Context Protocol , a standard for connecting AI assistants to other applications. Depending on your assistant, the connection may be called a plugin or a connector. The same LiveCase authoring tools can be used from different compatible assistants. Installation and authentication depend on the client; you do not need to write code for the conversational clients. This two-minute walkthrough demonstrates ChatGPT; use the client-specific instructions below for other agents. Choose your assistant ChatGPT · Claude · Claude Code · Grok · Grok Bot · Codex · Cursor · OpenClaw · Other agents Choose the assistant you already use and your institution supports. You only need to follow one setup route. The examples later in this guide apply across clients once LiveCase is connected. Before you connect Use the LiveCase account that owns the case or has author access to it. You also need an AI account or institutional workspace that permits custom MCP connections. Your workspace administrator may need to enable or add the connection. Use an AI service approved for your teaching materials, and check your institution's requirements before sharing confidential case material or personal information. The LiveCase server address is: https://www.livecase.com/api/v2/mcp Authenticate through the LiveCase sign-in screen when prompted. Do not paste your LiveCase password into an AI conversation. ChatGPT Install the published plugin 1. Open LiveCase in the ChatGPT plugin directory, or search for LiveCase in Plugins . 2. Select Install plugin . Sign in to ChatGPT if required, then connect your LiveCase account and review the permissions requested. 3. In a conversation, type @ and select LiveCase. Start with the read-only check below. Find LiveCase in Plugins. Screenshot of the public directory; signed-in controls may differ. The LiveCase listing explains what the connection can do. Choose Install plugin to begin. Alternative: add a custom MCP connection If your workspace requires a custom connection, open Plugins > + > Add custom MCP server . Name it LiveCase , enter the server URL above, and choose OAuth . Review the notice, choose Create as a plugin , then install and connect it. Follow OpenAI's custom connection instructions for your workspace. Avoid adding a second connection if the published plugin already works. Claude For an individual account, open Customize > Connectors , select + Add , then Add custom connector . Name it LiveCase and enter the server address above. Enter LiveCase and its server address, then choose Continue. Captured in Claude Desktop. Review the detected OAuth settings. Choose Sign in now and, if an OAuth client option is required, Register automatically . Complete the connection and sign in to LiveCase when prompted. For a Team or Enterprise workspace, an authorised administrator first adds the connector through Organization settings > Connectors . Members then find it under Customize > Connectors and select Connect with their own accounts. If LiveCase already appears in your connectors, open that entry and choose Connect rather than adding it again. Choose Connect to complete sign-in for an existing connector. This example is named “LiveCase Prod”; the name in your workspace may differ. In a conversation, use + > Connectors to enable LiveCase. See Claude's connection instructions for current menus and workspace requirements. Claude Code Claude Code is a separate client from Claude's web chat. For authors already using its terminal interface, add the remote server from the folder where you intend to work: bash claude mcp add --transport http livecase https://www.livecase.com/api/v2/mcp Open Claude Code, run /mcp , select LiveCase, and follow the browser authentication prompts. Return to Claude Code and confirm the server is connected before requesting case content. The command uses the default local scope; add --scope user if you intentionally want the connection available across your projects. These steps use Claude Code's OAuth support. Follow Anthropic's MCP instructions if your installed version differs. You do not need to paste a LiveCase password or access token into the command. Grok To connect LiveCase in Grok's chat interface: 1. Open Grok Connectors. 2. Choose New Connector , then Custom . 3. Enter https://www.livecase.com/api/v2/mcp and complete the required LiveCase authentication. 4. Return to a conversation and ask Grok to list the cases you can author without changing anything. For Grok Business or Enterprise, a team administrator must first add the custom server through Grok Business > Connectors in the cloud console. Members can then connect their own accounts. See Grok's connector instructions and workspace connector management. Confirm the connection with the read-only check before requesting edits. Grok Bot Grok Bot can add a custom MCP server through a conversation. Ask: > Add the LiveCase MCP server at https://www.livecase.com/api/v2/mcp using Streamable HTTP and OAuth. Help me complete the connection. Do not create or edit any cases yet. Review the proposed connection and complete the LiveCase sign-in when prompted. Send a new message after setup to ask for the read-only case list. Cursor's support team documents this chat-based custom connector setup. Use Connect apps to inspect installed connections and resolve any authentication request. Availability may depend on your account and team policies. See Grok Bot's connected-app guidance. Codex In the Codex CLI, add LiveCase and start OAuth sign-in: bash codex mcp add livecase --url https://www.livecase.com/api/v2/mcp codex mcp login livecase Complete the browser sign-in, then start a conversation and ask Codex to list the cases you can author. Adding the configuration alone does not confirm that authentication succeeded. If you use a packaged LiveCase plugin in your Codex app, connect that plugin instead of creating a duplicate server entry. See OpenAI's MCP configuration guide for client-specific settings. Cursor For a project-specific connection, merge this entry into .cursor/mcp.json . Preserve any servers already in the file: json { "mcpServers": { "livecase": { "url": "https://www.livecase.com/api/v2/mcp" } } } Open Customize > MCPs , confirm LiveCase is enabled, and follow its OAuth authentication prompt. Then use it from an Agent conversation. A global configuration can instead be placed in ~/.cursor/mcp.json . See Cursor's MCP guide for the current interface and configuration options. OpenClaw For OpenClaw installations with native MCP support, open the Control UI's Settings > MCP , choose Add server , name it LiveCase , select Streamable HTTP , and enter the LiveCase server URL. Configure OAuth for the server using the scoped configuration editor ( auth: "oauth" ), then use Sign in when available. Follow the installation's authentication instructions if sign-in must be completed through its terminal. After connecting, ask the agent for the read-only case list. See OpenClaw's MCP connection guide for version-specific setup and authentication. An administrator may need to configure the connection for a managed installation. Other agents LiveCase is not tied to one AI model or chat application. Other clients can connect when they support remote MCP over Streamable HTTP and a compatible authentication flow. A client's support for local MCP servers alone is not sufficient. Use these connection details in that client's own setup process: - Connection name: LiveCase - Server URL: use the LiveCase server address above. - Transport: Streamable HTTP - Authentication: OAuth, using your LiveCase account If a client only accepts a bearer token, ask LiveCase about an appropriate connection method before proceeding. Do not substitute your account password. Once connected, verify access with the same read-only check below. Client menus, availability, and tool permissions vary; a saved server entry is not proof of a working connection. Start with a read-only check Begin with a small request to confirm that the connection uses the right account: > Use LiveCase to list the cases I can author. Do not change anything. Then select a case explicitly: > Select “[case title]”. Confirm its title and link, then summarise its structure and learning objectives. Do not edit it yet. LiveCase works with one selected case at a time. Selection can persist between conversations, so confirm the active case whenever you start work or switch projects. If several cases have the same title, use the case link or identifier to distinguish them. Develop a case around your teaching purpose Give the assistant the audience, objectives, available teaching time, and central dilemma. Ask for a proposal before requesting changes in LiveCase. > Help me design a 30-minute MBA case about allocating resources under uncertainty. Learners should compare competing stakeholder interests and justify a decision using incomplete evidence. Consult LiveCase's authoring guidance and available templates, then propose a scenario and episode outline. Do not create anything until I approve the outline. Once you have reviewed the proposal, ask the assistant to create a new case and build the agreed content. Retrieving a template provides guidance; it does not automatically create a case. Work in manageable stages: objectives and dilemma, characters and structure, interactions and feedback, then debrief and teaching notes. Revise and review existing content The connection can work with characters, episodes, chats, badges, characteristics, debriefs, case information, teaching notes, and images. It can also consult the available chat types and authoring guidance. Try a focused request: > Read the opening episode. Propose revisions that make the learner's role and decision clearer while preserving the facts and learning objectives. Show me the proposed changes before saving them. Or examine the assessment design: > Review the choices, feedback, badges, and characteristics in this case. Identify where the scoring or branching may conflict with the learning objectives. Report your findings without making changes. For a broader review: > Run LiveCase's case quality review on the selected case. Retrieve the complete review, explain the findings with examples from the case, and propose a prioritised revision plan. Do not apply changes yet. The quality review is advisory. Check its recommendations against your subject expertise, intended learners, and teaching context. Review saved changes in LiveCase An instruction to create or update content can change your saved case. A discussion in the conversation is different from a successful authoring action. Ask the assistant to report what it saved and provide the case link. Before deleting content or approving a substantial revision, review the exact scope. Deletions cannot be undone through the MCP tools. Open the case in LiveCase and check the learner experience, alternative paths, scoring, factual accuracy, and debrief. The connection does not provide a publishing tool. Use LiveCase's publishing workflow after reviewing the draft. If something does not work - The connection option is missing: check your AI workspace's permissions with its administrator and consult the provider instructions above. - Your case is missing: confirm that you connected the correct LiveCase account and that it has author access to the case. - The assistant is using the wrong case: ask it to select the intended case explicitly and confirm the title and link before continuing. - The connection has expired: reconnect through your AI application's plugin or connector settings, then repeat the read-only check. - An edit is refused: check the requested tool permissions and the error message. Do not assume the change was saved; ask the assistant to read the affected content back. - You need session management or learner results: use the LiveCase application. These are outside the authoring tools provided by this connection. When you no longer need the connection, disconnect or remove it through your AI application's plugin or connector settings.

Extras: LiveCase MCP plugin

Follow the teaching notes for your case when assigning teams or roles. Some cases ask learners to choose these during the experience; others require you to organise the groups before the session. A team label in a report does not by itself create a shared-screen or shared-response activity. The screenshots use two fictional teams, Team Cedar and Team Indigo , represented by badges grouped under Teams . Review individual results Open Dashboard and find Leaderboard . Choose By player in Group , select the episode or overall results, and choose the metric to review. Filter by a team or learner Open Advanced search using the magnifying-glass button. Use Search by name for a learner, or Filter by badge for a configured team or role. Remove the selected badge filter when you want to see the full cohort again. Compare team results If the case defines grouped badges, choose the appropriate grouping, such as Teams , in Group . The dashboard displays group results and their members. Select the relevant metric and episode before drawing comparisons. Use the group view to structure discussion, then inspect individual responses where necessary. An aggregate can conceal differences in reasoning within the same team.
