The Reading Crisis in Business Education: Why Students Skip Case Studies (and How Interactive Simulations Fix the Learning Gap)

You spent two hours formatting that PDF case study for next week's class. Aligned the margins, added discussion questions, wrote a teaching note. Your students will give it maybe ten minutes. This is not a hunch. It is a documented crisis in business education, and the research is unambiguous. The same forces that have driven faculty toward AI tools for higher education as a response to student disengagement now demand a rethink of the case study itself.
Decades of studies on reading compliance tell the same story. Burchfield and Sappington (2000) found that only about 28 percent of students complete assigned readings before class. Clump, Bauer, and Bradley (2004) replicated the finding: 27.5 percent. Kerr and Frese (2017) tracked business students specifically: 35 percent read the case, but only when an assessment was attached. Without one, the number dropped by half.
A 2024 survey by Inside Higher Ed and College Pulse found that just 24 percent of students complete the assigned reading on a given day. The rest rely on peer notes, summaries, or what they can infer from class discussion.
The data is consistent across decades and institutions. The traditional case study PDF is not working the way it used to.

The reading crisis predates generative AI, but the tools have made it worse. A student can now paste a 30-page case study into ChatGPT and get a passable summary in under 15 seconds. They can ask for key frameworks, decision points, and even model answers. The case gets "read" in the shallowest possible sense.
This is not the same as understanding the material. Summarization is not analysis. But the student who shows up to class having outsourced the reading to an LLM can still participate in discussion. They can nod at the right moments. The professor never knows the difference.
The problem is not that students are lazy. The problem is that the format of the assigned reading is easier to outsource than to engage with. A static PDF cannot push back. It cannot ask questions. The result is not just higher engagement. It is assessment that actually measures judgment, not recall. Multiple-choice tests can be gamed.
