Design AI-Resistant Assessments That Reveal Student Reasoning

General

An AI detector score cannot tell you everything about a student's understanding. An assessment plan also needs evidence of how the student reached a conclusion.
Interactive cases can add decisions and explanations to that evidence. They do not make unauthorized AI assistance impossible.
Research has documented reliability limitations in tested detectors. Weber-Wulff and colleagues' 2023 study is one example. Its findings concern the tools and test conditions studied, rather than every current product.
Follow institutional procedures when concerns arise. Do not treat a detector result as conclusive proof of authorship.
Here is the uncomfortable question most academic integrity conversations skip: Why is it so easy for AI to do your assignments?
A chatbot may generate a plausible response to a case prompt. Ask what evidence would help you assess whether the student understands the argument.
A written assignment can still assess reasoning. Strengthen it with specific evidence requirements and appropriate follow-up discussion.
Choose an additional task when it gives you useful evidence of the learning objective.
A staged case can ask students to make a recommendation, receive new information, and revise or defend their reasoning.
Authors can build branching paths around those decisions. Use time pressure only when it serves the learning objective.
Ask for explanations tied to the evidence available at each stage.
AI can help with context-dependent decisions too. State permitted uses and plan how to examine understanding.
Decision-based activities can complement written analysis and discussion.
Consider these choices:
Relevant branching. Use authored paths to introduce meaningful differences in the evidence or consequences. Every learner need not receive a unique path.
Staged explanations. Ask learners to justify a recommendation before and after a new development.
Explicit criteria. Assess the evidence and trade-offs in the explanation. Response speed alone is not proof of understanding or misconduct.
Instructor debrief. Ask learners to explain a rejected alternative and what would change their recommendation.
LiveCase combines multimedia and questions within a case, supports multiple learner roles and branching paths, and allows configured AI grading for written answers and character conversations. These features support assessment design; they do not provide automatic cheating detection.
Use the AI Case Authoring Studio to draft a short case from your teaching materials. Our authoring guide explains the workflow.
Review the facts, scenario logic, criteria, and learner experience before delivery. Follow your institution's requirements for adopting a new tool.
Pilot the case, review the responses, and refine the debrief. Evaluate participation and demonstrated understanding separately.
It is an assessment designed to gather meaningful evidence of understanding when AI tools are available. It does not guarantee that students cannot use AI.
No format guarantees prevention. Clear expectations, explanations, and follow-up discussion can help instructors judge understanding.
Review the tool's evidence and limitations and follow institutional procedures. A detector result alone should not be treated as proof of misconduct.
Time depends on the source material, case complexity, and review needed. AI can assist with drafting; instructors still check and preview the result.
Plan how to review learner work and run the debrief at your intended class size. Configured AI grading can support written-answer and character-conversation assessment, while the instructor remains responsible for review.
