This MBA LiveCase immerses participants in the pivotal role of Chief Strategy Officer at Connecto Global, a dominant telecommunications incumbent facing the profound challenge of disruptive innovation. The simulation provides a rich context for exploring the Strategic Market Evolution and Incumbent Dilemma Model, where an established market leader must critically evaluate its reliance on existing strengths against the imperative to adapt to emerging market dynamics. Students are tasked with navigating the complexities of maintaining profitability in a mature market while contending with the rapid ascent of a revolutionary new technology, thereby engaging with the core tension between leveraging current success and securing future relevance.
The simulation commences with participants settling into their new role, immediately confronted by the CEO's request for a comprehensive strategic review in response to what is initially perceived as a minor market tremor from a nascent competitor. This initial scene quickly escalates as subsequent interactions reveal a palpable internal conflict among the executive team. Here, the Head of Marketing presents compelling data on the rapid adoption of the disruptive product, while the CTO raises pragmatic concerns about technological feasibility and investment. This dynamic interaction forces students to analyze a fundamental strategic dilemma: identifying the inherent conflict between leveraging a highly successful existing business and adapting to profoundly changing customer expectations.
As the narrative unfolds, external pressures intensify with the intervention of an influential activist investor, who demands a clear strategy for unlocking future value, thereby introducing a critical layer of financial and shareholder scrutiny. This adds complexity to the internal debate, requiring participants to synthesize diverse perspectives and manage conflicting agendas. The LiveCase culminates in a high-stakes emergency strategy session where all data and executive opinions converge, leading to a critical decision point. Participants must then articulate and rigorously defend their chosen strategic path—either to entrench the company's position in its traditional market or to pivot into the volatile, high-growth disruptive arena—directly to the CEO, thereby evaluating how a strong reliance on past methods can impact competitive positioning.
Throughout the LiveCase, participants engage in dynamic role-playing with AI-powered characters, including the CEO, CTO, Head of Marketing, and a key institutional investor. These interactive elements facilitate real-time decision-making and negotiation, requiring students to apply strategic frameworks, synthesize complex information, and justify high-stakes recommendations under pressure. This immersive design fosters the development of critical leadership competencies, including strategic agility, stakeholder management, and the capacity for making informed decisions amidst uncertainty and conflicting priorities.
The simulation concludes with a comprehensive debriefing, offering participants a structured reflection on the core learning objectives and the practical implications of their strategic choices. It reinforces an understanding of market disruption, the incumbent's dilemma, and the imperative for continuous environmental scanning and adaptation. Ultimately, the LiveCase equips future leaders with the essential skills to lead organizations through periods of profound change, balancing short-term profitability with long-term strategic relevance, and cultivating an organizational culture that embraces foresight and calculated risk-taking.
